The President of the University provides overall guidance and leadership to both the academic and administrative branches of the University of Asmara, as well as to its satellite campuses (Hal-hale and Paradiso).

The President works closely with deans and department directors, overseeing the development and evolution of program research and academic curricula. He spearheads efforts to recruit the highest quality faculty possible to teach at the University. He promotes and directs fundraising projects to raise much-needed funding for University programs.

As the chief executive of the University, the President provides vision and oversees strategic planning for future academic and research programs. He is the primary contact between the University and external academic and funding agencies around the world, with which the University of Asmara is building ongoing mutually beneficial linkage programs. He is also the University's liaison with the government of Eritrea, major internal and external funding sources, ministries, and other significant University partnerships.
