Profile of an M.Sc. graduate in Soil Science

Graduates can provide professional consultation, teach, or conduct research in one or many important areas:

  • land resources and their suitability for different types of land use;
  • soil fertility and its related fields: the behavior of nutrients (present or added) in the soil, nutritional requirements of crops, knowledge of appropriate methods for soil and plant analysis;
  • how to manage soil and water resources in a sustainable manner;
  • land use and management interventions in farming systems on a field scale, as well as on a watershed scale, aimed at the prevention, reduction, or recovery of losses of soil, water, and plant nutrients.

The program for the Soil Science Degree

The M.Sc program offers three specializations:

  • Soil Survey and Land Evaluation;
  • Soil and Water Management
  • Soil Erosion and Conservation.

A specialization comprises 3 courses with a total of 11 credit hours. A basis of 15 credit hours applies for all students. In view of the limited number of staff and students, not all specializations will be offered every year. The specialization(s) available will depend on the interests of the students enrolling in a given year.
