The Department of Land Resources and Environment seeks to educate and
prepare professionals to meet the extensive needs of Eritrea in the
management and conservation of the land. The Department trains graduates
in applied soil science with emphasis in one of the following areas:
- general soil science
- soil survey and land evaluation
- soil fertility and nutrient management
- soil and water management
- soil erosion and conservation
The program emphasizes sustainable productivity and management of agriculture
and trains graduates in the design and implementation of scientifically
sound research programs and development projects.
Profile of an M.Sc. graduate in Soil Science
Graduates can provide professional consultation, teach, or conduct
research in one or many important areas:
- land resources and their suitability for different types of land
use;
- soil fertility and its related fields: the behavior of nutrients
(present or added) in the soil, nutritional requirements of crops,
knowledge of appropriate methods for soil and plant analysis;
- how to manage soil and water resources in a sustainable manner;
- land use and management interventions in farming systems on a field
scale, as well as on a watershed scale, aimed at the prevention, reduction,
or recovery of losses of soil, water, and plant nutrients.
The program for the Soil Science Degree
The M.Sc program offers three specializations:
- Soil Survey and Land Evaluation;
- Soil and Water Management
- Soil Erosion and Conservation.
A specialization comprises 3 courses with a total of 11 credit hours.
A basis of 15 credit hours applies for all students. In view of the
limited number of staff and students, not all specializations will be
offered every year. The specialization(s) available will depend on the
interests of the students enrolling in a given year.
