The Department of Economics and Finance has established a new postgraduate
program in Economics as part of an overall effort to address nation-wide
needs for highly-skilled professionals in the field of Economics - most
specifically in the area of development studies. To address the complex
problems of this young nation, the graduate program will emphasize interdisciplinary
research, calling on graduates to learn a diverse set of skills applicable
to the needs of the country.
As a relatively new nation, Eritrea is highly dependent on agriculture,
which is the main source of livelihood for 80 percent of the population.
On the other hand, the country has significant potential in trade, tourism,
and manufacturing activity. This postgraduate degree program is expected
to promote economic research for knowledge generation and for solving
developmental problems. Students are expected to develop sound and economically
feasible contributions to the economic well-being of Eritrea. Graduates
are expected to be ready to serve the country and help their people
in the process of poverty alleviation and economic development.
Employment opportunities for master's level graduates in economics
are many in both government and non-government organizations. This is
particularly true for the financial institutions requiring professionals
working in the fields of policy and research analysis.
Areas of research will include problems of agriculture, trade, industrial
development, and financial investment. The new Ministry of National
Development is also expected to need the assistance of economists with
MA degrees who can undertake research.
