Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Degree Requirements
Applicants holding a Bachelor's degree from the University of Asmara (UoA), or from a college or university that grants degrees recognized by the UoA, may apply for admission to graduate programs. Degrees are recognized based on programs of study that meet or exceed the general educational requirements for comparable majors and degrees at the UoA.

The Bachelor's degree must have been earned at an institution that has official recognition by the Ministry of Education of that country as a university-level academic institution, or is accredited by an appropriate institution. The comparability of coursework and degrees will be determined solely by the Graduate School of the UoA in consultation with the concerned department.

If academic records are not in English, applicants must provide the official original document along with a certified English translation. UoA graduates can request their official transcript of record from the UoA's Registrar's office.

Graduate credits
Applicants with graduate credits from a recognized institution of higher learning can also apply for admission. Their last enrollment must, however, be not older than 2 years. They must have been regular students. When applicable, they may be allowed to transfer up to 9 credits for courses earning a grade of B or higher. Determination of the transferability of courses/credits shall be made during the admissions screening process.

Having been a graduate student at another university does not automatically guarantee admission at the UoA. The GPA requirements described below shall also apply.

Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirements
Applicants must have the following GPA on a 4.00 point scale in their Bachelor's record:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above; OR
  • A major GPA of 2.75 or above AND a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above. Females and minorities must have a major GPA of 2.60 or above AND a cumulative GPA of 2.40 or above.

It must be emphasized that applying does not imply acceptance. Even if all requirements have been met by applicants, departments reserve the right to select students according to their own criteria.

English Proficiency
Applicants with undergraduate degrees from universities/institutions whose medium of instruction is not English are required to submit proof of English proficiency. Applicants may submit such proof in the form of test scores (i.e., the Cambridge University accredited IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent). The Consultancy, Testing and Training Center (CTTC) at the University of Asmara currently administers such tests. Applicants must ensure that they get their test results ahead of the School of Graduate Studies application deadlines.

A minimal band 5.50 score on IELTS tests or its equivalent on the TOEFL and other related tests shall qualify an applicant to apply for graduate admission to the UoA. However, those applicants whose scores fall in the band range 4.0 - 5.49 must take a one-month remedial English course at the UoA before registration. No applications for admission will be accepted from those who score band 3.99 or less. The English proficiency test result must not be older than three years.

Letters of Recommendation
Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation: one from a current or recent employer, and two letters from former academic instructors. (Click here for the Letter of Recommendation Form.)

Proof of Financial Resources
Applicants must certify that they possess adequate financial resources to cover all fees and support themselves (and their families, if they accompany the student to Eritrea) while in residence at the UoA. If sponsorship is through an organization or government agency, the sponsor must inform the graduate school, in writing, of the terms of support. The official letter of sponsorship must include specific information on the amount and duration of the financial award. The letter must be addressed to the School of Graduate Studies of the UoA.
