The Social Science Education Unit was formerly part of the department of secondary school Teachers (SST), but became a separate unit in the academic year 2001/2002. The unit currently comprises three disciplines, and offers degrees to student teachers in English, Geography and History Education. The Unit offers four pedagogic courses to students in the faculty as well as to students of other colleges.

Graduates from the Social Science Education Unit will leave the University as fully qualified high-school teachers. Due to the ever-growing student population in Eritrea, the teaching profession will remain unsaturated for the foreseeable future. The Unit is, in fact, expected to expand in the near future, and increase its student intake so that it can fulfill the huge demand of the Ministry of Education for teachers.
