Overview
The main purpose of the Bachelor Degree Program in Sociology &
Social Work is to prepare sociologists and social workers with the knowledge
of Eritrean social systems and emerging social issues and to develop
the skills needed to tackle such issues at all levels. The University
of Asmara included Sociology as a unit in its curriculum at the freshman
level under the college of Arts and Language Studies in 1991, and in
1994 it was raised to the status of the Department of Sociology and
Anthropology. After the curriculum was revised, the Department of Sociology
and Social work was formed.
A graduate in this field may find employment opportunities in various
Ministries, such as Labor and Human Welfare, Health, Tourism, Education,
Local Government, and Mines and Energy as well as with non-governmental
organizations. They may also find employment in rural and urban community
development projects and research institutions.
