Overview

The Faculty of Education was established in 1997. Prior to this, between 1992 and 1997, it was known as the Education program. This program offered between 15 and 18 credit hours of pedagogical courses to Science and Social Science students based on the assumption that most of the graduates would become secondary school teachers. However, it was also realized that there was an urgent need for certified secondary school teachers, so it was proposed that a department should be created that would address this need.

The Department was named Secondary-School Teachers Department (SST). In 2001, SST was split into three units: the Middle School Education Unit, Science Education Unit, and Social Science Education Unit.

The Science Education Unit has a number of objectives:

  • To equip students with basic theories and practices that will enable them to become qualified secondary school teachers in the areas of Mathematics and Science.
  • Through its in-service and short-term upgrading programs, the unit also enhances the academic and professional skills of teachers who are already teaching.
  • To prepare graduates in the areas of educational research methods and development and improvement of the curriculum and preparation of teaching materials in their work environment.
