The Department of Political Science was launched at the University of Asmara in 1997. Besides offering courses for those majoring in Political Science, it provides courses to students from the departments of Economics, English, History, Journalism & Mass Communication, Law, and Public Administration. The Department also offers one introductory course at the Freshman Level, which is a required course for majoring in Political Science.

At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the department has also introduced a certificate Program in International Relations and Diplomacy.

Currently the primary employer of Political Science graduates is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and there are also prospects for job opportunities in other ministries. Other employment opportunities lie with NGOs and IGOs based in Eritrea.
