Overview
The Department of Physics offers a four-year Bachelor of Science degree
in Physics. The program is designed to train professional physicists
for industrial and research organizations and also to lay firm foundations
for those who wish to pursue graduate studies in Physics.
To meet these objectives, the curriculum is composed of courses that
are considered essential to a sound understanding of Physics. Appropriate
courses in Mathematics are also included in the program so that students
become proficient in the application of mathematical methods in Physics.
Students graduating in Physics have a quantitative understanding of
the physical processes that underlie all of natural sciences and modern
technology. Modern medicine, for example, uses instrumentation like
x-rays and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging that are better understood
by physicists. Likewise, mineral and water searches are greatly assisted
by resistivity and seismic soundings, the quantitative aspects of which
are again better understood by physicists. In fact, in any field where
physical measurements can lead to improved techniques, physics graduates
are key participants. Such needs have already arisen in both industrial
and government settings in Eritrea and a growing economy will certainly
create more. Some of these needs may be filled by students directly
after graduation with a minimum amount of specialized training. Others
will be better filled by those who have masters and even doctoral degrees.
