Overview:
Since 1996 the Department of Geography has offered a four-year program
leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography. The Department also
offers courses to other faculties/departments.
Geography, the study of the earth as home of man, gives a holistic understanding
and interpretation of the natural and cultural environments, with emphasis
on their interaction and/or interdependence and the spatial patterns
that such interactions create. Thus the major objective of the Department
is to produce professional geographers with sophisticated skills and
knowledge of man-nature relationships.
The Department equips students with skill courses, human geography courses
and physical geography courses with emphasis on man-environment relationships.
Graduates with this training and skill will be able to:
- Engage in cartographic work, especially the preparation of thematic
and topographic maps, which are vital for resource inventory, planning,
etc.
- Make land use surveys and mapping, land capability and crop suitability
studies, and land use planning
- Interpret remote-sensed satellite imagery and aerial photographs
- Analyze spatial patterns, and
- Teach Geography in Junior and Senior Secondary schools of Eritrea.
