Overview

In 1973 the University of Asmara first offered a B.A. Degree Program in English, with a Minor option in History. From this humble beginning which offered only one course, the Department of English has now become the largest in the University, catering to the needs of a very large student population.

The Department runs two major programs: the BA Major, and the Freshman/Sophomore Program, which relates to the growing number of Freshman and Sophomore students of the university.

Students pursuing the BA program may choose between:

  • English Major Program without Minors, or
  • program with Minor options in
    • History
    • Journalism and Mass Communication
    • Political Science
    • Sociology and Social Work

The curriculum of the English Department was revised for the third time in 1999 to make it current and relevant to the job situation in Eritrea. The revised curriculum prepares students for diverse positions such as editors, translators, literary writers, linguists and for jobs in the growing private sector, where knowledge of English provides the basis for a career in offices and public relations work.
