Overview
The Department of Economics offers a four-year undergraduate program
leading to a B.A. degree in Economics. A wide range of courses are offered
giving equal emphasis to theory, quantitative, applied and policy related
issues. A major-minor program has been introduced and students of the
department are accordingly required to select their minor field of study
from other related disciplines. This is aimed at providing our students
with some flexibility in the choice of course and flavor of interdisciplinary
studies. The Department offers an introductory course to all freshman
students on a two-semester basis. The future plan of the department
is to begin postgraduate study and research in selected fields of economics.
Graduates from the department of Economics and Finance may find employment
in government ministries, the private sector and other non-governmental
organizations including UN agencies. Among the major employers are the
Ministries of Finance, Trade and Industry, Transport and Communications,
Tourism, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The Bank of Eritrea and
other financial institutions also absorb many of the graduates from
the department. At present the private sector is small in Eritrea but
with its expansion in
the future, more graduates will also compete for private sector jobs.
