The Department of Earth Sciences offers a four-year program in Geology
leading to a B.Sc. degree. The aim of the program is to provide students
with the basic requirements needed to serve in a professional capacity
in any of the fields in which qualified geologists are demanded. These
fields include exploration for metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits,
fossil energy and water resources. The program also includes a research
project in geophysics, which aims at assessment of the impact of geologic
processes (e.g. earthquakes) on the human environment. The program is
broad enough to allow the graduates of Geology to pursue higher studies.
After graduation, students will have dependable skills in geological
mapping, sampling methods, report writing and data presentation, basic
methods for exploration and exploitation of earth resources and in selecting
target areas for exploration. The major employing agents are: the Ministry
of Energy & Mines, Land, Water & Environment and exploration
and mining companies. Though limited in number, geologists are required
in the Ministries of Public Works, Agriculture, Fisheries, Municipality
of Asmara (e.g., Department of Infrastructure), tourism and consulting
firms.
