Overview:
The Department of Biology offers a four-year Bachelor of Science degree
program. It is designed to provide students with the fundamental principles
of Biology and introduce them to a variety of disciplines within the
life sciences. Upon the completion of the program, students will have
a comprehensive understanding of the structure, function, organization,
and relationships of living systems, as well as an appreciation of the
diversity, breadth, and depth of the field. All Biology majors are required
to minor in Chemistry to enable them to understand biological phenomena
at the molecular level.
To meet these objectives, the curriculum is mainly composed of courses
considered essential to a sound and comprehensive understanding of Biology.
An attempt is made to keep a balance between basic Biology, (Botany,
Ecology, Microbiology, Zoology) courses and the newer aspects of biology
(molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry) including applied fields.
Through a combination of elective courses, literature review papers,
and senior research projects, students are encouraged and expected to
pursue their special interests, while at the same time gaining some
experience in conducting research and writing scientific papers.
The Biology major provides foundations for a wide variety of careers.
Past graduates have found employment in areas such as teaching, health
science fields, agriculture, biotechnology and other biomedically related
areas. The program offered by the University of Asmara, moreover, offers
adequate preparations for graduate studies and participation in research
activities.
