Overview:
The department of Anthropology and Archaeology was founded in 2002/2001
(formerly it had been part of the department of Sociology and Anthropology).
Students are offered a major in both Anthropology and Archaeology, taking
an equal number of required courses from both fields.
The objective of the department is to train Anthropologists whose knowledge
about the norms, values, customs, traditions, belief systems and languages
of the various Eritrean ethnic groups may be used in the formulation
and implementation of socio-economic policies and in the solution of
development problems in the country. The Department also aims to train
Anthropologists and Archaeologists who will work as cultural resource
specialists at different levels in order to protect and conserve Archaeological
sites, enforce antiquities regulation ,and manage, study and interpret
material culture objects.
Graduates from this program may find employment opportunities in museums,
in a number of government ministries, in non-governmental organizations,
research institutes, rural and urban community development projects,
private consultancy offices and in private sector tourism.
