Overview
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Asmara was established in 1995 and since 1999 has offered a five-year degree program. The curriculum of the department is designed to provide students with a sound background in the three core areas of mechanical Engineering: Applied Thermo-Fluid, Mechanics and Machine Design, and Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. The objectives of the department are:

• To produce competent mechanical engineers at the B.Sc. degree level for designing, installing and maintaining all types of mechanical facilities that economic sectors of the country require.
• To carry out research and development activities in the areas of renewable energy, transfer of technology and efficient use of resources
• To provide consultancy services.
  

Graduates from this department may expect to find employment opportunities in the Chemical and Process Industries sector, as well as the Transport, Energy, Manufacturing, Construction and Communications sectors.
