Overview
The Department of Land Resources and Environment teaches undergraduate
students to understand the nature, properties and behavior of soils.
Graduates carry out land evaluations, advise on appropriate land use
and management, rehabilitate degraded lands and natural vegetation,
and improve the productivity of rain-fed agriculture through appropriate
soil management practices. A special emphasis is placed on soil conservation
and on the various agriculture specialties.
The Department trains students to apply their knowledge in the field
and work directly with Farmers in the development of improved practices.
Our graduates play a vital role in the development and improvement of
the agricultural economy of Eritrea.
A principle aim of the department is also to give graduates the necessary
knowledge and skills to pursue further education, conduct research,
and to run an agricultural business or manage development projects.
Employment opportunities
There is a need for skilled land specialists in all sectors of Eritrean
society as the Government and private sector are both greatly understaffed.
In addition, a growing number of NGO's operate development projects
in Eritrea, and they all need local qualified staff for implementation,
data collection, and monitoring. In all these ways, the employment outlook
for Land and Water Science graduates will remain very promising for
the foreseeable future.
