Since its foundation in 1986, the College of Agriculture
of the University of Asmara has constantly grown and evolved to meet
the needs of the country. Indeed, this has been a big task; given
the importance agriculture plays in the national economy. Latest figures
show that approximately 70-80% of Eritreans are active in this sector.
Of the current teaching staff, 15 hold Ph.D. degrees, 22 hold M.Sc.
degrees, and 15-30 hold a B.Sc.
Since revision in 2001, the College offers six programs:
Degree Programs in Land Resources and Environment, Plant Science,
Animal Science, Agricultural Engineering and a Diploma Program in
General Agriculture. There are plans to introduce two more programs
in Agricultural Economics and Agriculture in the near future, while
the longer-term plan is to introduce a Post Graduate Diploma Program
and MSc Programs.
The College of Agriculture is embarking on a project
to establish a commercial farm attached to the College building. The
activities of the farm will include both animal and crop production.
Initially it is expected mainly to support the college financially
and will also be a useful training field for students of the College.
The College also has a number of other plans for the
near future, which include performing workshops (for teaching and
research); and introducing in-service training courses. We plan to
concentrate on the development of full-applied research programs and
to further strengthen our internal linkages with the various ministries
in Eritrea.
Graduates of this College find opportunities to work
in institutions directly or indirectly related to the Ministry of
Agriculture, Ministry of Fisheries and the Ministry of Land, Water
and Environment.
