Overview
The Department of Animal Sciences trains students
to effectively manage animal production systems, conduct research
and assist pastoralists, farmers and others in upgrading existing
animal breeding practices and introducing modern techniques of animal
husbandry.
There is a great need for graduates of this program
in the areas of animal production and health in both teaching and
research. To meet this need, the department's curriculum is oriented
towards the study and methodology of animal production and health.
The program consists of a series of general science courses followed
by a comprehensive curriculum of different animal science specialisations
with related supporting courses and field work.
The department maintains an animal farm divided into
specialized sections for poultry, swine, sheep, goats, apiculture
and dairy.
Employment Opportunities
There is a growing demand for skilled manpower in the specializations
related to animal husbandry, production and health. In recent years,
almost 100% of Animal Science graduates found employment immediately
upon completion of their degree. While the ministry of Agriculture
is the largest employer of animal science specialists, prospects
for employment in the private sector are also increasing, particularly
due to the ongoing development of private dairy, beef fattening,
poultry and sheep farms. Other employment opportunities for graduates
of this program lie in the areas of Banking, Investment and Livestock
Insurance.
