Introduction to the basic principles of animal husbandry and the methods
of husbandry applied to different species of domestic animals in the
tropics. The role of livestock in agriculture, plant, and animal inter-relationships.

The gross anatomy, histology, embryology and functions of the systems
in farm animals. (3 credits)
ANSC 301 - Principles of Animal Nutrition
The study of the basic principles of animal nutrition, composition of
feed stuffs. Role and requirements of nutrients. Digestion, absorption,
and metabolism of nutrients in farm animals. Role and function of vitamins,
minerals, and water. (3 credits)
ANSC 302- Applied Animal Nutrition
Classification of feedstuffs and factors affecting the value of feeds,
formulating rations, types of feeding to different farm animals, treatment
and storage of animal feeds. (3 credits)
ANSC 311- Small Ruminant Production
The distribution, breeds, uses, breeding, production systems, feeding
and management of sheep and goats with reference to indigenous types.

ANSC 312- Rangeland Management
Definitions of terms related to range science. Factors affecting the
use of range land. Planning the grazing use of land. Methods of measuring
utilization. Conservation and management system. (3 credits)
ANSC 321- Animal Health and Hygiene
The concept of diseases including diagnosis and prevention. Nature and
causes of animal diseases, Health records and routine examinations.
Principles of disease control. Description of symptoms, diagnosis and
treatment of the major diseases. Principles of animal hygiene.(3 credits)
ANSC 322- Animal Breeding
The principles of breeding and selection with the aim of improving productivity
in farm animals. The genetic-environment interaction. Inbreeding and
cross-breeding.(3 credits)
ANSC 401- Veterinary Parasitology
The study of the important endo- and ecto-parasites of farm animals
with emphasis on protozoans, arthopods and helminths. Their prevention
and control.(3 credits)
ANSC 441- Reproductive Physiology of Domestic Animals
The study of the anatomy and physiological processes of reproduction
in farm animals. The role of Endocrinology as related to reproduction
and lactation in domestic animals. Fertilization, gestation and parturition,
Artificial insemination.(3 credits)
ANSC 431- Dairy Cattle Production
The study of dairy breeds, selection, systems of production, feeding,
housing and management. Records and record keeping,milk synthesis, milking
machine and their maintenance. (3 credits)
ANSC 416- Beef Cattle Production
The study of Beef cattle breeds origin. Characteristic features of breeds
& types, production systems, breeding, nutritional requirements,
housing and management live animal evaluation and assessment of degree
of finish, beef fattening systems in the tropics.(3 credits)
ANSC 411- Poultry Production
Origin, distribution and types of poultry. Principles and practices
of poultry production: Incubation,breeding, nutrition, housing, sanitation,
disease prevention and control, marketing of poultry.(4 credits)
ANSC 412- Swine Production
The origin,classification and domestication of pigs. Principles and
practices of breeding. Nutrition, housing, sanitation, disease prevention
and marketing of pigs.(2 credits)
ANSC 422- Meat Hygiene & Public Health
The basic principles of meat inspection.; slaughtering techniques, dressing
and preservation of carcasses; construction and management of slaughter
houses.(3 credits)
ANSC 451- Draft Animal Husbandry
Origin and domestication of equines; equine breeds, population, distribution
and utilization. Principles and practices of breeding, nutrition and
management of equine draft animals.(1 credit)
ANSC 461- Camel Production
Origin and domestication of camels. Camel breeds, populations, distribution
and utilization. Principles and practices of breeding, nutrition and
management.(1 credit)
ANSC 432- Processing & Marketing of Animal Products
Principles and practices of handling, processing and marketing of meat,
dairy and poultry products as well as skin, hides, wool and other animal
by-products such as bone, blood, horns, hooves.(3 credits)
ANSC 402- Apiculture
The study of the basic principles of bee keeping, breeding and rearing.
Systems of honey production and marketing. (1 credit)
ANSC 421- Research Methods in Animal Science
The basic principles of how to design the experiment, field survey,
select the best fit designs for experiment, computer analysis, reference
collection and research paper writing.(1 credit)
ANSC 442- Senior Research Project
Field of laboratory investigation of a particular approved topic in
animal science that required the presentation of a comprehensive report
under the supervision of an advisor.(2 credits)
